Jewellery care
From regular cleaning to everyday habits, a little care keeps lab-grown diamonds and precious-metal finishes looking their best.
Diamond cleaning
Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance, but they can still fracture and can be scratched by other diamonds. Oil from fingers, dust and grime dull brilliance quickly. Clean regularly with a soft cloth. A mild rinse in lukewarm water, then a gentle wipe, removes most daily dirt.
Excess dirt can loosen prongs. Look after the setting as well as the stone — that is the surest way to avoid losing a diamond. For a deeper clean, a purpose-made diamond cleaning stick is a safe option.
Make jewellery a finishing touch
Perfume, lotions, sun cream, oils, shampoo and hairspray can dull, tarnish and deteriorate metals and gemstones. Put jewellery on last, once skin is dry. Chemicals that cling to the underside of a diamond make it look grey and lifeless.
Remove before bed
It is easy to snag bracelets, tangle chains and bang rings while sleeping. Take pieces off as part of your evening routine and store them in their padded Selene box.
Cleaning gold and platinum finishes
A two-cloth jewellery polishing system (one cloth to clean, one to polish) helps remove and slow tarnish. If you do not have a jewellery cleaner:
- Add a few drops of washing-up liquid to a lukewarm bowl of water. Avoid hot or ice-cold water — sudden temperature changes can stress jewellery.
- Soak for ten minutes to loosen dirt.
- Gently brush with a soft, unused toothbrush, taking extra care around stone settings.
- Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Gold is soft and scratches easily, so be gentle.
